The Wombats were formed in Liverpool in 2003 after attending the Institute Of Performing Arts in the city. Two local characters, Matthew Murphy and Dan Haggis plus the addition of a Norwegian Tord Knudsen and they create high grade post punk indie rock, laden with cheek and humour.
They began releasing material from 2006 and slowly garnered a strong and committed following that delighted in their rock star behaviours laced with veins of drunken and foolish goings on. Their debut album Proudly Present…A Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation was released in 2007 and the follow up album The Wombats Proudly Present…The Modern Glitch included the post punk disco classic Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves). The Glitterbug album followed in 2015 and this majorly added to their success, featuring the singles Greek Tragedy, Give Me A Try and alongside strong UK success the album made good inroads into the US market too.
Wayne Wilkins is a total music professional. South London of origin, he was playing piano by the age of 4, attended the Royal College of Music, and then further studied engineering, mixing and producing at both Townhouse and Olympic Studios, where he worked closely with the legendary engineer Spike Stent. Alongside Stent, Wilkins was able to be around great studio masters like Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins as well as bands like Oasis and No Doubt.
At the turn of the millennium, Wilkins ventured out further on his own, at first with Irish band the Corrs and then helping to develop the artist Natasha Bedingfield. Chart success arrived with their song Single, before then achieving a Number 1 single with the These Words, which was co-written and co-produced by Wilkins. Subsequent hits such as Love Like This helped take Bedingfield into the American market.
Wilkins then wrote T-Shirt for Shontelle, Battlefield for Jordin Sparks, and then the song Sweet Dreams for Beyoncé taken from her Grammy Award winning album I Am…Sasha Fierce. He then achieved further UK Number 1 single success with Cheryl Cole and her platinum selling single Fight For This Love.
Afanasieff began his music career as a jazz musician and worked with producer songwriter and drummer Narada Michael Walden. Learning his craft working with Whitney Houston on her debut album, his first major production was writing the track for the James Bond movie Licence To Kill, for Gladys Knight.
He won the 1999 Grammy Award in the Record Of The Year category for producing My Heart Will Go On for Celine Dion for the film Titanic, which became the best-selling single of 1998. Further movie work includes the Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson title track duet for Disney’s Beauty And The Beast, and Go The Distance, the Oscar-nominated Michael Bolton song for the animated film Hercules. He also won the Grammy for Producer Of The Year, Non Classical in 2000.
However, a key part of his career was working throughout the 90’s with Mariah Carey. Key songs included the Number 1 Billboard Hot 100 song Hero, One Sweet Day with Boyz II Men which held the run for the longest run at Number 1 on the Billboard Charts for 23 years, at 16 weeks. This song was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration with vocals at the 1996 Grammy Awards. On top of this, Afanasieff wrote and produced the worldwide evergreen hit All I Want For Christmas Is You, which now has global sales well in excess of 15 million copies.
Rådström created the Neiked Collective as an outlet for his songwriting work. He had been writing songs with his childhood friend Miriam Bryant, and the song Sexual, heavily influenced by Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, became a global hit, peaking Top 5 on the UK singles chart.
